Mooresville, NC (April 24, 2008) - Old School Racing announced today a new plan for the series. Under the new plan, The Old School Racing (OSR) Series will launch its inaugural season in the spring of 2009 and not in the spring of 2008 as originally planned. The postponement of the inaugural season of the OSR will allow a partnership to form that will make the OSR bigger and better for the drivers, crews and fans. Although there will be a delay in the beginning of the series, the series will be about much more than just the competitive nature of these drivers. The series will become much more of an event to celebrate the pioneers that molded modern racing, rather than just a race with drivers from the past. The new partnership between OSR and the soon to be named partner has not been completed, but plans have already begun to move forward for the 2009 debut of the redesigned OSR program. “I regret that the 2008 season has been canceled and apologize to the old school fans that have been dying to see their past hero’s compete once again,” said Norm Weaver Managing Partner of the OSR. “But, for those die-hard fans, we are planning few surprises for 2008 in hopes of filling some of that void.” “We had a great schedule planned for 2008,” Weaver added. “But to make this series survive the test of time, with the help of our new partners, we have designed a much better series for the ultimate fans experience. I don’t want to go too far into the details, because we want to do that when we announce the redesigned Old School Racing program.” The
OSR will have several announcements over the next few months about
the redesign of the series. In addition the OSR will have
announcements about surprises for 2008, drivers, sponsorship
announcements and more. Keep checking the Old School Racing website
at
www.osrct.com for all the latest news.
The
Old School Racing Series is based in Mooresville, NC and will field
cars for such drivers as David Pearson, Harry Gant, James Hylton,
Geoff Bodine and more. Look for the series to debut in the spring
of 2009. To find other drivers set to compete in the series please

February 2007 - Old
School Racing (OSR) and the concept was drafted. The big shocker for OSR: Instead of working out of the OSR booth, the marketing agent was in another booth representing another racing series. We came to find out that he had recently purchased that tour. From August thru December, he was promoting his new series instead of OSR. All of the sponsorship figures he had been presenting to OSR was a lie, for his own series, or just blatantly fabricated. One of the potential title sponsors he was touting had never even received a call from the marketing agent. A big "lesson learned" here, for sure. The dilemma: This blunder put us way behind because most sponsorship dollars were already committed for 2008, but we still tried to make it happen and almost did. Norm and I hired another marketing agent and began looking for outside partners to help make OSR happen in 2008. We were turned down by some of the biggest names in auto-racing. Many of them have stated in interviews and continue to say "we can't forget our roots" and "they come from the same working class that makes up the majority of racing fans," but a couple that we are still negotiating with have made the next step in partnering with OSR. Every one of them loved the OSR concept and wished us luck. Reality: Without sponsors we can't continue to build race vehicles for the 2008 or now the 2009 OSR season. Without vehicles we can't race. Sponsors won't commit without race cars and we can't build race cars without sponsors. Unfortunately, our individual pockets are not that deep. $2.5M, if you are curious. Moving forward: With our without a partnership, OSR is planning for a 2009 debut. Sponsorship interest is very high and some sponsors have already given OSR a verbal agreement if OSR can prove the 2009 season will be a reality. Many sponsors have very high interest in working with OSR in 2009, but say that their 2008 budget is already spent. Possible quick term solution: Within two weeks OSR may be announcing a partnership, with a household name in auto-racing, to provide OSR with the esources that will solidify OSR as a legitimate series. This partnership will ensure sponsors that OSR will be a reality in 2009. This stability will allow sponsors to make the decision to partner with OSR to promote their companies and products with minimum risk. We hope this partnership, or any other opportunity that may come along in the upcoming weeks, will be what we have been looking for to make OSR a reality, without losing the look and feel of the concept we created at OSR. There will also be a few special promotions in 2008 to promote and gear up for the 2009 season. Stay tuned to the www.osrct.com web site for press releases, although I'm sure this will be a major announcement that will be broadcast nationally if it comes to fruition. Norm and I are truly sorry that the 2008 season will not take place, but I hope all of you know that we have worked our behinds off and continue to do so to make this series a reality. We are sorry if you have made any arrangements that will now have to be canceled or changed because of the 2008 season cancellation, but we kept plugging away until the last possible moment. Now that moment has passed and we physically can't build the vehicles in time for the first race in 2008, so we are announcing the cancellation and we hope it has not caused any inconveniences, and if so, we are truly sorry. Where did Old School Racing come from? During the 2007 Daytona 500 TV broadcast, DW repeatedly said, "I wish I was still out there rubbing fenders with those guys". That night, I sat up in bed and wrote down the outline of Old School Racing concept. I tried to answer every question that had DW announcing instead of driving, along with the other retired drivers now out of the sport. Every since that night in bed (I sometimes now refer to it as my nightmare) my entire life along with my brothers, has been devoted to making this Old School Racing concept a reality. DW, we put Old School Racing together for you guys, our heroes. The drivers we love, and with all-due-respect, the drivers we love to hate. These drivers still have the talent to compete at the highest levels. I have put together a series for our racing hero's with safety in mind, at racing in venues and with equipment that will all but eliminate the ultimate risks. Old School Racing will allow the drivers and fans to get back to what made this sport so famous, fender-to-fender action. Saturday night racing at its best, by the most talented drivers there ever were and still are, in this sport we all love so much... "Old School" style! We're not going anywhere! I still want to let everyone know that we will do what ever it takes to make this series a reality, you can bet on it. Thanks for taking the time to read my ranting and ravings and have a wonderful remainder of the 2008 race season and many more to come! See 'ya at the
track in '09.. Gene Weaver |
